This Month In History - June

It's the end of the month again which means a look back on the anniversaries of historical events from June. I thought I'd carry on these sorts of posts since there seemed to be a positive reaction to the last one. This month we've got coronations, Orwell, Batman and the Korean War.

1. 2nd -The coronation of Queen Elizabeth II in 1953 which was a whopping 63 years ago.
2. 3rd - Rock and roll was banned in Santa Cruz in 1956 as the authorities claimed it was, "detrimental to both the health and morals of our youth and community." How bizarre!
3. 4th - the passing of the 19th ammendment in 1920 which allowed women to vote in America
4. 6th - D-Day landings in 1944 in an Allied offensive against Germany in WWII
5. Also on 6th was the 1949 publishing of Orwell's 1984 - one of the most famous writings of all time and the origins of 'Big Brother'.
6. 14th - US congress adopts the stars and stripes flag in 1777
7. 16th - the first woman went to space in 1963. You go Valentina Tereshkova!
8. 23rd - Batman was released in 1989, directed by Tim Burton. Seems we're still obsessed.
 9. 24th - The beginning of the Berlin Blockade where the Soviets denied West Germany access to Berlin.
10. 25th - This day saw the outbreak of the Korean War in 1950.

I feel like I could have added loads more of events that are historically siginificant, like the assassination of Franz Ferdinand (the guy, not the band), which ultimately led to WWI. Everything seems to happen in June.

Do you know of anything else that happened in June? What events should I include for July?

5 Reasons you should be binge watching Community right now

Now that I've finished my first year of uni, I've had a lot of time on my hands - a lot of time. Much of this time has been dedicated to binge watching TV shows. First there was Misfits, then New Girl and now I have discovered Community and I recommend that you do too. Here's 5 reasons you should be binge watching it right this very second.

1. Puns glorious puns. Are puns your favourite type of joke? Of course they are and Community is full of them, especially name puns.
2. It's Inspirational From Jeff's regular motivational speech-giving to Britta's consistent activism, Community covers it.

3. You'll never get bored Each episode is different. Sometimes there's singing. Sometime's there's paintballing. Sometimes there's closing the whole college to host the worlds biggest pillow fight. But is there ever any learning?
4. Inappropriate & strange sense of humour. It's funny. You're not sure why but it is.
5. Troy and Abed. The main reason you should watch Community is for these two. Ultimate friendship goals and by far the funniest characters.
If I haven't convinced you already, the episodes are only on for 20 minutes each so it wont take long to get through all 6 seasons. What are you waiting for?

Do you already watch Community?

New Home Wishlist - Ikea & Hema

As of next week I will be moving into my new student house. What better time to replace any shabby old things that I have managed to destroy in the last 6 months? I feel like this wishlist turned into a bit of a basket wishlist. I intend to use the first copper basket to store my hair stuff like dryers etc. I see these baskets all over pinterest and this one is only £4! The other baskets will be used as either washing baskets or to store my endless amounts of stuff. My new room will have a double bed so I have to buy new bedsheets, as you can see I am really liking the grid print. I will be getting a neutral coloured blanket so it matches whatever bedsheets I do end up buying. Finally, I can't remember if I have a bedside table. If not, how sweet is this table from Ikea and it's only £15 - bargain!

Are you going to uni or moving into new accommodation? What stuff do you want for your new room?

Crochet & Denim

Top - Primark // Skirt - Primark // Shoes - Topshop

I've been longing for a denim button down skirt for a while. I tried on the Topshop version that everybody and their grandmother seems to own and the buttons were really fiddly so I wasn't prepared to pay £30 for a skirt that was just going to annoy me. Low and behold I found this gem in Primark for £10 - a fraction of the price of skirts elsewhere. Of course, the denim isn't as good quality as those from Topshop and Asos but it looks virtually the same. It's going to be glued to me over the summer as it's so easy to wear because it matches with almost anything (i.e. it's easy to just throw on hell yeah minimal effort). Today I paired it with a crochet striped top and these severely ugly yet fabulous sandals from Topshop. Why am I so attracted to ugly shoes?

Do you have a button down denim skirt? Which version do you prefer?

Blogosphere Magazine: Issue 6

 Blogosphere Magazine Issue 6* - £4

This is a little bit of a different sort of post to usual seeing as I don't think I've ever reviewed a magazine on my blog before. There's a first for everything, right? Some of you fellow bloggers may have heard of the Blogosphere Magazine before. It's written entirely by bloggers (even the editors are bloggers) and is aimed at all of those involved in the blogging world. It consists of not only your typical fashion and beauty blogs but also travel, photography and food, featuring their recommendations of who to follow and look out for. Each blogger featured is accompanied by a little blogging fact file, including them telling you what camera they use, which is something I always wonder. As well as a nosey into the best bits of different blogs, the magazine is filled with tips and tricks, how to sections and a blogging agony aunt to solve all of your blogging related problems. Each issue has an in depth interview with some of the most well known bloggers, giving you an insight into their world and blog. This month it's Marcus Butler who, like many other bloggers and youtubers, is publishing a book.

Blogosphere magazine is really worth a read if you want something different to your usual magazines and it's really helpful at providing inspiration and even motivating you to keep on blogging. You can buy subscriptions to the magazine, e-versions and even past issues if you want to catch up (issues 1-3, 4-6).

Have you ever read Blogosphere Magazine? What did you think?

Denim, Stripes & Duster Waistcoat

Top - Primark (old) // Skirt - Topshop // Waistcoat - Primark // Sandals - H&M

I've gone back to my usual self and wearing almost all black outfits again. Maybe it's the appearance of all this sun? It does mean that I can go out minus the tights and blind the world with the paleness of my legs, which a man decided to comment on when I went out the other day. Thanks man. I haven't owned a denim skirt probably since I was about 10 but I couldn't resist this Topshop gem. I really like the A-Line style because it doesn't cling to your fat bits and it doesn't make you look like you got massive hips. Today I just paired it with a striped turtleneck top from Primark, which I bought years ago, along with my newly purchased duster waistcoat, which never leaves my back. So comfy and light, making it perfect for the summer.

Do you like A-Line skirts? What do you think of the duster waistcoat trend?

Update #3

Shout out the the sort of irrelevant but pretty pictures I took in Chester.

I haven't done a proper update post since March so I feel it's time to share with you what I've been up to. I can guarantee it's not a lot.

  •  8 hours worth of exams
  • Got me hair cut for the first time in ages
  • I finished first year of uni with a high 2:1
  • I got drunk a lot
  • I dislocated my jaw from laughing too much (It's as stupid as it sounds)
  • I went home and went on the Coronation Street tour and Chester zoo and it was fabulous
  • I got to witness my Dad trying to sheer his sheep
  • Climbed Cabot Tower and let me tell you there are a LOT of stairs
  • Unnecessary shopping trips
  • And of course, a lot of sleeping
But now I intend to do something with my summer like moving house and seeing more of Bristol.

Chester Zoo

Warning- Picture Heavy Post

Believe it or not this is a heavily reduced number of the pictures my sister and I actually took whilst at Chester Zoo the other week. Yep between us we took over 600. yikes. Despite the wet and windy weather we wandered around the zoo looking at all of the animals, walking through the butterfly enclosure and a room filled with tropical birds, where I constantly thought one was going to land/poop on me. I still don't know how I feel about zoos, whether they're a good thing or a bad thing. The orangutans and chimpanzees didn't look happy at all but the rest of the animals seemed to be fine. The fish, flamingoes and sloths (yes they had sloths but they were really hard to photograph) were my favourite and there was some really nice trees. Yep my sister was excited about the lions and I was excited about the trees.

How do you feel about zoos? Have you been to Chester zoo? What are your favourite animals?

How I Spend Lazy Days

I'm one of those poor unfortunate souls who has to work all day on Sunday so I don't get to use Sundays as my lazy day. Instead I have my lazy day during the week (everyday). We all have our own ideas of what to do on a lazy day and I think it's nice to see how different people spend it and get ideas so we're not just bored.

In one of my previous posts, I said how I don't have a living room so I spend my lazy days in my bedroom, usually in bed. I tend not to get up until at least 11am, maybe even later. I spend an hour or so drinking coffee and flicking through Instagram before getting showered and dressed into a comfy outfit, usually leggings or jeans. Next, I put my laptop on, read through blogs, watch TV - I'm really into Misfits and New Girl at the moment - and I will do this until I get hungry. Quick break for food and then back to the TV watching. I will do this probably until 1 am. Lazy days for me are spent doing the bare minimum but we all need a lazy day once in a while don't we?

How do you spend your lazy days? Do you just stay in bed too? Do you even bother getting dressed?

Bad Love

Summer Camp Band T-shirt // Topshop Cardigan // Topshop Jamie Jeans // Doc Martens Shoes

Yo. At the end of May I went to the Summer Camp gig in Manchester and it was probably the best I've ever been to. At the end I obviously had to buy one of these super rad 'bad love' t-shirts to add to my band t-shirt collection. Today I just threw it on with my Jamie jeans, which I love because of the ripped hems on the legs. You don't know how long it took me to find these without ripped knees and in my size. You can't go wrong with a band t-shirt and jeans combination.

If you haven't listened to Summer Camp before then you should definitely check them out.

The Coronation Street Tour

Seeing as I was back home and they've re-opened the Coronation Street set for tours once again, me and the Mother decided to visit the old Corrie set in Manchester. You get taken around the set, both indoors and outdoors, seeing where they used to film the Corrie episodes before moving to a bigger location in Salford. They take you through how they film each scene, how they design the set and a sneak peak into the costumes used and the dressing rooms. When you're sat at home watching it, it may seem like not much though has gone into it when in reality each little detail is planned out. Finally you get to have a wonder on the cobbles, the only part you can take pictures of, where you get to see all of the famous settings from the Rovers to Roy's and a little peak in everybody's gardens. If you're a fan of Corrie and in the North I do recommend you visit whilst they are still having tours because it's not very often that you get to have a wonder around a TV set.

Are you a fan or visited the Coronation Street set? What did you think?
