Holocaust Memorial Day 2015

You may have seen the title of this post and thought, "why is she posting about that?" or "isn't this supposed to be a fashion blog?" or many will have just scrolled past because it's not a nice little outfit post to look at. As I've mentioned before, it's important to remember the past in order to learn from your mistakes and that can be on a personal level or a larger level like the Holocaust. It surprises me how many people don't know what the Holocaust is all about so if you don't know or are a bit unsure go and read this.

Today, the 27th January, is Holocaust Memorial Day (HMD) and is also the day of the liberation Auschwitz-Birkenau, the largest Nazi Death Camp. Today is a day where we should all just take a few moments out of our day to stop and think of the millions died as a result of Nazi persecution. The HMD trust wishes for today to be a day for us to also stop and think about those who have died in subsequent genocides such as in Rwanda, Cambodia and Bosnia as we all often think that the Holocaust was a single and unique event when in reality, it has happened time and time again. The wider message of Holocaust Memorial Day and this blog post is that genocide doesn't just happen. It comes about as a result of gradual building up of hatred and discrimination. Something that we all know is still prominent in today's society across the globe.

What makes today even more prominent is that 27th January 2015 marks 70 years since the Auschwitz-Birkenau camp was liberated. 70 years on and we still don't know how to live in a society without racism, without discrimination despite seeing its effects over and over again. This year the HMD trust has chosen its theme to be, 'keep the memory alive' in the aim to put the survivors at the heart of the memorial day. Having met two survivors, Kazimierz Piechowski (who escaped from Auschwitz) and Zigi Shipper (the loveliest man in existence), it is safe to say that they are extraordinary people and after everything they have suffered, their stories should be remembered. I think the most memorable thing I learnt from Zigi was not to hate anybody because hating people is tiring and no good will ever come from it and I think that's the message we should take from HMD.

If you don't know much about the Holocaust or if you want to know more then the BBC are running a series of programmes in commemoration so please watch them because I think it's a topic everyone should know about and the amount of people who don't know what it is is astounding.

Playlist #1

Just a quick post to share with you some of the songs I've been listening to a lot recently. These posts are quite handy as they're quick to make and shows you what I'm listening to whilst I'm doing non-post worthy stuff. I will give a youtube link to all of the songs too.

Gotta Find You - Camp Rock (don't judge me ok)

You should listen to them all and be dazzled by my wonderful music taste. (Especially camp rock)

Update #1

Bought myself a record player // Snow ugh // Finally watched TGBH // First selfie of 2015// Best Purchases of 2015 so far

My first update of 2015 and I must assure you it's not that exciting. All of have done this year so far is coursework and been to Ikea (I have a home decor addiction ok?). Oh and watched Grey's Anatomy but that's obvious, right? I have figured out that working in HMV makes me want to buy all of the CDs. Ever. I am loving The War on Drugs, Future Islands, Royal Blood and Grimes and currently have them on repeat. I must admit I'm not appreciating these weather warnings for snow, especially since I moved to Bristol to get away from the stuff and I just want to stay in bed for the rest of my life. Like seriously. As of now I am starting on a 5 month revision mission so I may be a bit inconsistent with the whole blogging lark and I will probably only blog as an act of procrastination. I will probably do a lot more posts like this one, so I hope you'll enjoy them!

A-Line

Jumper - Primark
Skirt - Primark
Boots - ASOS (similar)
Watch - Casio @ Argos

First outfit post of 2015 and it's a good'en! I managed to pick this skirt up in the Primark sale before Christmas for a whole £3 and it's glorious apart from serious squeak-age which can be ever so slightly embarrassing. Also how fab are these boots? I got these in the ASOS sale after Christmas and I am seriously in love. My rule with shoes is that if they're chunky and ugly then  I will probably love them.

In other news, I have just made myself a 30 hour a week revision timetable so if I get chance to blog then I will if not - tough. It's only a hobby and my uni work comes first. I will try and do update posts instead. Don't forget to follow me on twitter (@amyleehaynes) for pointless tweets whilst I try and procrastinate.

Revision Tips

You might have read the title of this post and thought, "revision? exams are over 4 months away!" but don't kid yourselves guys, you need to start revising now. If you have January exams and you've only just started revision then feel free to panic. I'm going to share some tips with you that have worked for me. I'm not saying this is the only way to do it but it's the way that is easiest for me and I know that this method works.

  • Make a revision timetable. It sounds lame but it's the only way to ensure you make time and fit your studies in.
  • It's not enough to just go over your notes once. It's probably not enough to go over it twice. Go over your notes at least three times, if not more. Repetition is the best way to get information to stay in your mind.
  • Re-write all of your notes. Fix any gaps, stuff you've missed and check stuff that doesn't make sense.
  • When you do this, it may be a good idea to read up on the subject to find additional information. This is particularly good for a-level and university revision.
  • Go through the re-written notes, highlighting all of the important bits. Write these points up into a smaller set of notes. Tip: I like to write important facts in red pen - it's supposed to stick in your mind better
  • Make the reduced notes into A3 mind maps for each topic/subtopic. Use different colours to make it more memorable.
  • If you have time, make the A3 mind maps into A4 mind maps. Instead of writing each point in detail, use key words.
  • A good way to test what you know and what you don't know is to try and copy the A4 mind map from memory. If you can't remember certain points, then those are the areas you need to revise more.
  • The final thing I tend to do is to use the A3 mind maps to produce a small set of revision cards. Get other people to test you. Test yourself. Try and remember each point on the card.
  • Past papers. The most important thing you can do is to practice writing essays or planning them at least. When doing so, figure out what topic it's talking about and then you should remember the relevant mind map/revision card and the information should come flooding back to you.
  • If you learn by listening, record yourself saying the notes and if you're a practical learner find a physical way to learn.
  • Take a 10 minute break every half an our and a half an hour break every 1-2 hours. Breaks are important! I use breaks to watch youtube videos.
  • Anything that helps you remember is good. Whether it's a weird/rude link or the weirdest acronym ever, if it helps, use it!
  • Reward yourself with food!
Example of how I do A3 Mind Map
As you can see there's a lot you can be doing so it's best to start earlier rather than having a last minute panic. From now until Easter, I will be letting myself have one day a week off from revision. If you ever feel like you can't be bothered, don't give into it. Just tell yourself to stop being a little bitch because you have to do it otherwise you wont do well and that's the truth. There's no way around it. I promise you it will all pay off in the end.

Motivational 2015

As I mentioned in my 'Hello 2015' post, around Christmas time we all get a bit lazy. In the essence of the whole 'start the year as you mean to go on' lark, I thought I'd share some links to posts that share ideas on how to stay motivated in the new year and start the year right.

There are tonnes of other challenges and motivational tips, especially on Pinterest. Don't forget to check out the thousands of printable calenders that are available in order to organise all of the stuff you're going to do.
